See: Many sights are still closed due to the earthquakes, but much more remains open. First stop by the International Antarctic Centre where you can learn about the many missions launched from Christchurch and interact with some of the rescued penguins. For even more animal encounters, head over to the Orana Zoo, New Zealand’s only open air zoo where you can hand feed giraffes and get a close-up look at tiger cubs.

Christchurchis steeped in English charm and there’s no better way to experience it firsthand than to try your hand at punting. The lazyAvonRiver meanders throughChristchurch and punting is an iconic activity here – necessary for any visitor to try at least once. Sit back, relax and allow the punter to take you down river gondola style as you soak in the bucolic surroundings.

New Zealand is famous for extreme adventures and Christchurchlives up to this reputation through the fun and fast paced Adrenalin Forest. The Forest is actually a multi-level aerial obstacle course that features courses appropriate for most ages and experience levels. Essentially a ropes course on steroids, you can choose from a low key path or a heart-pumping, physically challenging course. The choice is yours, but this unusual activity is a great way to get outside and have fun while enjoying New Zealand’s beautiful outdoors.

Shop: Christchurch has a vibrant market culture and any shopping experience has to include some browsing at these popular areas. The Riccarton Rotary Market is New Zealand’s largest outdoor flea market and attracts buyers and sellers from all over the country. Merchandise here can be a little quirky, but great bargains can be found when the market opens every Sunday. For something a little more refined, peruse the Arts Centre market which is one of the most popular weekend destinations for Christchurchians.

If it’s a more normal shopping experience you‘re after, Christchurchalso offers a variety of suburban shopping malls. The Palms, in Shirley has more than 80 stores and a great entertainment complex. The Westfield Riccarton and the Northlands Mall are easy to get to via bus from the Christchurch city centre and each offers a huge selection of stores. If you’re a high-end shopper, the Merivale Mall tempts visitors with designer stores and boutiques.

Eat: Christchurch is a great foodie town, and visitors can find something for all budgets. Nestled inside the fashionable clothing store Untouched World is the company’s Native Garden Organic Café. Just like their clothing line, the Untouched World Café highlights sustainability through its use of locally produced, organic foods from a wide range of suppliers. A breakfast and lunch establishment, they offer all-day breakfast including their famous Eggs Benedict. For lunch be sure to check out the daily specials.

If you’re interested in specialty foods a stop at the weekend food markets is a must. Christchurch Farmers Market on Saturdays and the Opawa Vegetarian Market on Sundays are fun and engaging ways to learn more about the local foods. For a special treat, stop by the Canterbury Cheesemongers close to the Central Business District for a quick snack.

Looking for a high quality dinner without the fuss, then make reservations at the quirky restaurant Cook’n With Gas. This establishment is also located near the Central Business District in a classic villa featuring a roaring fire, hardwood floors and an intimate, bistro feel. Their focus is on both fine food and wines, helping guests find the bestNew Zealand vintages to go with the masterfully prepared meals. More than just offering great food, this is a fun place to spend the evening with friends and family.

Drink: Christchurch enjoys a fun mix of posh wine bars and classic pubs, thanks to the local university. Enjoy a quiet start to your evening at any one of many great wine bars including Le Plonk, Saggio di Vino or Annies Wine Bar. For a more traditional pub experience, pull up a stool at The Brewers Arms, Sullivans Irish Pub or the Vic and Whale.

Stay: Some of the city’s major hotels remain closed following the earthquakes, but many great options are still available. Luxury options include The George and the Millennium Hotel Christchurch (closed until May 2012). For cozy and modern, The Classic Villa Bed and Breakfast and the Orari Bed and Breakfast are great options. Finally, those traveling on a budget won’t regret their stay at either the KIWI Basecamp or the Haka Lodge.

Walk: One of the most important things any visitor to Christchurch can do right now is to walk around the eerie perimeter fence marking the demarcation line of the damage created by the earthquakes. Spend an afternoon observing key Christchurch landmarks including the Cathedral, University of Canterbury and the Arts Centre and reflect not just on what’s been lost, but how the city is rebuilding. For a more pastoral stroll, meander through the Christchurch Botanic Gardens stopping for an ice cream or hop on a boat to punt down the Avon.

Get Out: Christchurch is the perfect gateway to enjoy the best the South Island has to offer. To witness the stunning beauty of the Southern Alps, take the TranzAlpine train journey to Greymouth and back. The four-hour adventure is one of the best train rides in the world and the unique opportunity to observe the natural beauty ofNew Zealand firsthand is an amazing experience.

If trains aren’t your thing, join a day tour out to Mt. Cook, the highest peak in New Zealand, relax in the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools or drive to Kaikoura for some of the best whale watching in the world.

Listen: Christchurch has its own symphony orchestra which performs throughout the year including Sunday afternoon concerts. There’s also a vibrant club music scene and you can always find great bands performing at Club 22, Fuel Bar and the Pierside Cafe.

Avoid: Chilly weather. New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere and winter comes in June, July and August. If you’re visiting during these months, be sure to bundle up.
