See: After spending a couple days in the city of Vancouver it's easy to see why it is so often rated as one of the best places in the world to live. Not only is it a great place to stay, but a wonderful place to visit as well. There is such a great assortment of things to do and see in the city that both locals and tourists alike are kept well entertained.
In the city's downtown area head to places like Gastown, Vancouver's oldest district, and set your eyes on the old steam clock and the interesting architecture. Wander through the markets of Canada's largest, and most authentic, Chinatown. Head up the Vancouver Lookout tower for amazing 360 degree views of the city, or head to the massive Stanley Park and stand amidst enormous trees, relax on one of the many beaches or visit the Vancouver Aquarium.
Head to the city's “North Shore” if you're looking to get away from the race of the city. In the summer months you can climb up Grouse Mountain on a gondola where at the top you will be met by a grizzly bear sanctuary, a very entertaining lumberjack show, and incredible views of the city and surrounding area. In the winter, people go up Grouse Mountain to ski, snowboard, or just enjoy playing in the snow. Also on the North Shore don't miss the famous Capilano Suspension Bridge and tree top walk. If you haven't seen enough in the area, there is also a salmon hatchery open to tourists on the North Shore.
Shop: Vancouver is Western Canada's premier shopping destination. Here in the city you'll find all of the world's top names in fashion as well as a number of local designer labels.
To get your fill of shopping head directly to Robson Street which always buzzes with activity as downtown Vancouver's busiest street. To find all the top designer labels, you need to look no further than Robson street.
Eat: Although eating in Vancouver is an international activity, the selection is definitely dominated by Asian cuisine. The city's large Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese communities have certainly brought their culinary skills along with them. It seems like there is a sushi joint on every corner ranging from simple sushi bars like Tsunami to more places like Kodaya on Davie Street which arguably has the best sushi in town. For other types of popular Asian cuisine, Sun Sui Wah on Main Street has great Chinese food with a focus on seafood, Au Petit Cafe, also on Main Street, has possible the best Vietnamese food in town and if you're looking for Korean food try Jang Mo Jib on Robson Street.
However, one shouldn't leave Vancouver without trying the local seafood. Of course Salmon is popular on the menu but other delicacies such as scallops wrapped in bacon and served with a maple syrup glaze are a must sample. For the best seafood in the city head to “Coast” on Alberni Street or my personal favourite the Blue Water Cafe on Hamilton Street.
Drinking: The drinking side of Vancouver is about as varied as the culinary aspects. Vancouver has everything from high end cocktail bars to run down pubs and everything in between. The city's drinking area is right in the middle of downtown on Granville Street. The quirky party zone shuts down to traffic on weekends and visitors begin to see Vancouver in a completely different light as all types of different characters seem to pop out of the wood works.
One of the best places to grab a drink, albeit an expensive one, is to head to the Landmark Hotel bar which is a rotating restaurant with amazing views of the city and Stanley Park. For a pub type atmosphere try Celisi's Irish Pub which is found just off Granville Street on Smithe, or just a block away try Doolin's which is on Nelson Street. If you're looking for a bit of a wild time head directly to the Roxy, which is frequented by locals, tourists, and celebrities alike.
Stay: Vancouver has an accommodation for just about any budget. The backpackers will find comfortable confines in any one of the many HI-Hostels. The downtown hostel is the nicest although the old military barracks in Kitsilano is also a nice place to stay.
For those with a little bit more cash to spend on accommodation the nicest places to stay are right downtown. The usual suspects like the Sheraton and the Holiday Inn exist, but there are some other gems. The Carmona Plaza offers executive style suites with beautiful full windows for a great view of the city. Otherwise the fancy décor and history of the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver will surely satisfy your desire of being pampered.
Walk: Vancouver might be the best walking city in all of Canada. There is seemingly a trail anywhere and everywhere. Downtown, everything is so close together there is no real need for any other transportation other than your feet. The entire waterfront is lined with pathways as no building has rights to be directly on the ocean, and a stroll just about anywhere along the coast is a treat. For a longer excursion head into Stanley Park and walk along the sea wall where you'll be treated to sights like the native Canadian totem poles, beautiful views of the city, as well as the potential to see a variety of sea life, including, at times, whales off in the distance.
Get Out: You don't have to travel too far to get out of Vancouver, and there are some beautiful sights just outside the city. One of the most beautiful drives in the world is from Vancouver to Whistler known as the Sea-to-Sky Highway. Along the way you'll see the impressive Shannon Falls. Another great day trip is to head across the channel to visit the capital of British Colombia: Victoria. If you're looking to get out and explore the water, zodiac trips to spot Orca Whales in the summer months is a great activity.
Listen: Although the music in Vancouver is quite varied there is no denying the fact that they love their Rock music. Along Granville Street there seems to be a big show going on nearly every night of the week. Many of the pubs in the area also have live concerts. If you're looking for a live jazz club check out Capones on Hamilton Street.
Avoid: Avoid East Hastings Street. The street is the one part of the city worth avoiding and although it is close to some major attractions like Chinatown and Gastown it shouldn't be walked along. This part of town is the one black mark on an otherwise beautiful city, and thankfully it is a quite contained, and small, area.
