      Mini-Guide to Belfast

You may want a short city break, you may want an idyllic rural retreat - whatever your desire, Belfast is an ideal destination. Belfast city is a modern, booming place, having enjoyed a long-overdue renaissance in recent decades, particularly since the 1998 Good Friday agreement. Teeming with trendy bars, hip clubs, traditional pubs and swanky restaurants, the nightlife is second to none, and you won't run out of places to let your hair down. During the day, there are more than enough historical sites and places of interest to keep you busy. If that's not your thing, or you merely need a spot of retail therapy, the city has top notch shopping facilities with every high street store you could need and many more besides.

Behind Belfast's contemporary faade is a city rich with a unique culture and an important history. Belfast Castle, City Hall and the Ulster Museum (closed for major renovations until 2009) are some of the principal historical attractions around the city, and are worth a visit.

      Belfast's historical attractions

The Fernhill House Museum relates the history of the Shankill area, the World Wars and home rule and is an interesting and educational attraction. Admission to most of Belfast's historical attractions is cheap if not free. For a totally different (and, some would say more enjoyable) experience of Belfast's history, the famous Crown Liquor Saloon is an opulently decorated and delightfully authentic gin palace with a wonderful atmosphere and sense of the past.

Walking in a city is often the best way to get a real feel for the place, and it's particularly nice when the city offers a respite from the concrete and glass of an urban jungle. The beautiful Botanic Gardens in Belfast are a delight to visit, particularly when the weather is fine. If scenery, greenery and leisurely strolls are to your taste, there is a great choice of public parks at your disposal in the city (check out Grovelands).

For panoramic views of the city and beyond, hop in your rental car and take a drive to the Cave Hill Country Park. Covering part of the Belfast Hills, this huge area has numerous walking and hiking paths as well as 5 Neolithic caves that can be accessed. The park is a wonderful day trip in itself, made even better for those traveling on a budget as it is admission free. An adventure playground in the park will keep kids happy, and admission is cheap so the budget conscious needn't panic here either!

      Eating out/nightlife in Belfast City

The culinary experience in Belfast has improved greatly with the city's rebirth, with a fantastic selection of restaurants open throughout the city sure to please gastronomes. Budget dining is not a problem here, with many cheap ethnic and low cost contemporary restaurants offering broad menus. The traditional chippy won't hurt your finances, nor will some pub grub in one of Belfast's many establishments.

Nightlife is great here, with a wide range of clubs and venues catering to a myriad of musical preferences. Traditional pubs playing Irish music are also plentiful, and alcohol is relatively cheap. The Golden Mile is full of lively spots, most offering discounts and happy-hour offers to suit those on a budget. The Odyssey Arena is also worth visiting, a massive 10,000 seat arena and entertainment complex hosting an Imax theatre as well as clubs, eateries, bars, bowling and much more.
