Wander Vigo’s hilly terrain and explore the alleyways of the old city center. Take a breather in Plaza de la Constitución, one of Vigo’s most attractive squares, where lush pots of flowers hang from windows above busy bars and cafes. Plaza de la Constitución is in the medieval heart of the city, and on it visitors will find the history museum and cultural center, Casa Galega da Cultura, located in the former town hall.
Those interested in Vigo’s contemporary art scene should pay a visit to MARCO (Museo de Arte Contemporánea de Vigo). The museum is located in a building from the 1880s that was once the city prison. Entrance is free and a guided tour is just 1€/person.
Shop: Galicia is renowned for its excellent food and wine. While most Galician delicacies should be enjoyed while while in Vigo, some can be taken aways as souvenirs. Make sure to pick up a couple bottles of the region’s top wine, Albariño.Take a day-trip outside the city to visit and purchase at cellars Condes de Albarei, Marqués de Vizhoja or Bodegas del Palacio de Fefiñanes. Also be sure to pick up one or two Tetilla cheeses, in any supermarket or cheese shop in Vigo. The symbolically-shaped cheese is from Galicia and is some of Spain’s best.
Eat: Seafood from the Atlantic and Galicia’s ‘rías’ is on the menu in Vigo. Try oysters at Vigo’s traditional market, O Mercado da Pedra and have lunch at any of the many restaurants around the market. Also try Restaurante Cies on Playa de Canido, Ébano and superb local joint, La Mari. For something sweet, sample Galician pastries at El Molino.
Drink: Estrella de Galicia beer to sip like a local. Of course, the region’s Albariño wines are also a must, and can be sampled in any restaurant or bar in the city or in cellars just outside Vigo,stop by Calle Arenal after 10pm for live music and pop over to the Rosalía de Castro for bars and tapas joints.
Stay: In Vigo visitors will find accommodations to fit every budget. For a high-end stay in the middle of town, book at Nagari , a boutique hotel with five stars and a spa on Plaza de Compostela. Hotel Pazo los Escudos is another five-star option, and Hotel Ciudad de Vigo is an excellent four-star. Try two-star Hotel Puerta Gamboa in the old city for an exceptional value. The hotel has a restaurant serving Galician fare plus homey rooms start at €65.00 a night. Budget travelers will like Ancla Dorada,a hostel and guest house in a fun area of the city with lots of nightlife offerings.
Walk: Stroll paths along the Lagares River which crosses the entire city from A Raposeira to Sámil Beach. The 8.3 km route winds through urban and natural Vigo. Visit Castro Park and explore its many trails. Check out the 18th century military fortress located there as well as its manicured gardens. Castro Park also has bike paths for cycle-savvy visitors. Take in the view after walking up to The A Guía Hill. From the lookout point admire the vista of Vigo and the bay. On a clear day, the photo opp is well worth the walk.
Get Out: Many come to Vigo for a night or two and then grab a boat to the idyllic Cíes Islands, one of Galicia’s main attractions. From Vigo it’s an easy 30 minute ferry ride to the Atlantic archipelago, a Spanish National Park. There are few services on the Cíes Islands, and those who want to stay the night will have to plan ahead and book a space at the only island accommodations, Camping Islas Cíes. Day-trippers will find hiking trails through lush forest, sugar white beaches, a couple cafes and two restaurants. Vigo’s beaches Baluarte and Las Barcas are also worth checking out in summer months.
Listen: Come to Vigo during festival time to sing, dance, drink and eat with locals. Take part in the Fiesta de La Reconquista in the in late March, or the religious celebration Fiestas Bouzas in July. Just outside of Vigo, participate in the traditional dance festival of Danza de San Roque de Hío in August. In the winter months, enjoy Carnaval de Cobres in Vilaboa around lent time (Feb-March). For something more cutting-edge, travel to A Coruña to international music festival, Sonar.
Avoid: Unless you love the rain and chilly weather, avoid Vigo in the winter months. Come during the summer for warmer days and breaks from rain showers. However, stay clear of camping on the Cíes Islands in August when most of Spain goes on vacation! The Cíes Islands are packed in August, meaning long lines, food shortages and crowds. Come in June, July or September to better enjoy the islands.
