Only nine miles from the Mediterranean Sea, Reus was the birthplace Barcelona’s big daddy architect, Antoni Gaudi, who designed Sagrada Familia Church, Casa Battlo, Park Guell, etc. Reus is located near the Penedes wine region and about an hour from Barcelona.  As a small, beautiful  city, it is easy to meander.

See: Born in 1852, the belated birthday present for Antonio Gaudi’s birthday celebration was the opening of the Gaudi Centre Reus in 2002.  What?  No buildings in Reus by Gaudi?   The Gaudi Centre Reus’ three floors compensate by offering an in depth look at this creative genius.  Located in the heart of the City’s historic center, the lines of this interpretive center are starkly modern in contrast to his organic designs.   Audio guides, accompanied with text next to the exhibits, offer extensive information.

Gaudi loved wandering fields and woods gathering inspiration from nature.  He said, “The tree is my teacher.”   Heavily influenced by nature, the centre displays samples of objects from nature that are aligned with similar models or pictures from his buildings.   There is a snail and nautilus shell that reflects the spiral staircase at The Sagrada Familia Church.

Original school records show Gaudi’s class lists and attendance records. He failed mathematics for the second time in 1864.  Somehow, for me, that makes up for the geometry class I failed in high school.

Shop: There are rarely maniacal shopping crowds in Reus so you can saunter leisurely from store to store.  A very cool store Abacus, with a bright yellow sign, has unusual paper products, books, and music.  N’Expresso, with it’s slick coffee makers and good coffee is a caffeine junkie’s dream - if George Clooney can advertise for them, it holds sway with me.  Upscale women’s clothes hang enticingly at Spazzio Moda on Passeig del Camp.  Carrer Pallol is loaded with shops with some chain stores.

Eat: Outdoor cafes are great for tapas and wine.  A surprise awaits on the top floor of the Gaudi Centre Reus:  the Gaudi Restaurant is a Michelin One Star. Conclude a tour with gourmet food.   Prices average sixty euros per meal. With a Gaudi Centre admission ticket, the bargain price is twenty euros for an outstanding  lunch or dinner.   For a quick snack, grab a pastry to-go at Forn Sistare.  Four generations have been baking bread here since 1910.  Their specialty is dark bread.  Café de Reus was an old dressmaking shop.  Now, to create intimacy, some tables are in nooks separated by short, etched glass walls. This cozy restaurant is right off the main Plaza Mercadal.  Hearty Catalan food is dished up with fast service.  Close by on Galanes Street, is Baro’s.  This small, old store is a perfect place to pick up locally grown hazelnuts, almonds, and a package to make the Menja Blanc pudding.

Drink: La Ferreteria is a unique bar/ restaurant that began as a hardware store in 1923.  Small compartments, once used for hinges and hammers, are now filled with wine bottles.  Eight black and white photos line the wall and portray the original store.  Reproductions of old brass lamps are for sale.  Casual and fun, the laughter cranks up at around seven.

Stay: The Hotel Gaudi is in the center of Reus and is decorated in the style of Gaudi's designs. A good basic three star, it is located seven miles from the airport.  On a tree lined avenue, the elegant Hotel NH Ciutat de Rues is five minutes from the center of the city.  Wooden floors distinguish theHotel Quality Reus as well as the spacious rooms.

Walk: the incredible Modernista Walking Trail to view twenty five stunning Art Nouveau buildings. The ornate Casa Navas is.still owned by the original family.   All the electrical work, decorative painting, furniture, kitchen, are original.  You must have an appointment and guide to tour Casa Navas and often the guide is a family member. Great photo ops on this walk.

Get Out: Imagine a wealthy business man living in Reus in the late 1800’s. If he was stressed out or wacko, he could check into the opulent Institut Pere Malta originally called The Madhouse of Reus.   In the Wing of the Distinguished, a patient could have received psychiatric care, heard concerts in the salon, played billiards, or tennis.  About ten minutes by car from the center, this place is an Art Nouveau beauty rich with stained glass, hand painted tiles, and elaborate furniture.

Magnificent views of the Costa Dorada and rolling countryside await from the octagonal bell tower of the Priory Church of San Pere, a Gothic church from the sixteenth century. This is where Gaudi was baptized.  A parade with the Giant  People is held in June where the figures lumber by the church.  They are unusual as some are Japanese, Native Americans, and Africans to denote the international commerce of Reus during the turn of the century.

For a closer look at the amazing Giant People, they rest during the year at the eclectic Salvador Vilaseca Archeological Museum.  This Museum is dedicated to traditional elements of Reus like the Olive Oil Room which displays old olive oil presses.  Maria Fortuny, a famous Catalan painter who died at age thirty six in 1874, is featured with paintings of sweeping landscapes and war scenes.  A gallery is dedicated to modern painting and sculpture with changing exhibits of contemporary art.

Listen: Folks are wailing the blues in April and May at The Blues Festival.  Venues are cafes scattered about the city.  Memory Mash in November, features an unusual film festival of black and white films.  These are contemporary films but made to look like movies from the thirties and forties.  They are in several languages including English with Spanish sub titles.   Gaudi would be tapping his foot with the rest of the crowd.

Avoid: Don’t wait until the last minute for tickets to these architectural wonders:  The Navas House and the Pere Malta Institute.  These must be bought in advance at the Tourist Information Bureau.
