      Ancona Mini Guide

Ancona, a city and seaport in the Marche region of Italy, is situated on the Adriatic Sea and is the centre of the province of Ancona. The Ancona Airport is situated 18km from Ancona city centre and is served by low cost budget airlines, making it an ideal airport for tourists wishing to explore Ancona and the surrounding Marche region.

Ancona is a city that is still taking its first steps on the road to becoming a popular tourist destination, as for a long time it has played second fiddle to some of Italy's more spectacular cities and towns. A pretty port city, Ancona should not be overlooked as a weekend destination for people looking for a budget break - the low cost airlines offering cheapflights, and the city's new-ness to the tourist industry mean that most an entirely affordable holiday is possible, no matter the budget.

      Things to See/Do in Ancona

While much of Ancona's medieval architecture was destroyed during the Second World War, there are still some buildings of interest in the city. The Medieval Cathedral of San Ciriaco is still standing, set on a mountain overlooking the city, and is worth visiting (the views alone make a trip worthwhile). A walk around the city in the sunshine is a delightful (and delightfully cheap) way to discover the understated charm of Ancona - start your trip from the bottom of Corso Stamira by the docks. Walk by the façade of the ruined church of San Agostino before making your way to the Piazza de la Republica.

The Teatro delle Muse here has been reopened after major renovations. The nearby Via della Loggia is home to the Loggia dei Mercanti, a fine Venetian Gothic attraction. Inside is a glass pavement panel allows for interesting views of ancient church remains below. From here, stroll to Piazza del Plebiscito where a splendid if slightly worse-for-wear statue of Pope Clement XII can be seen in front of the neoclassical Church of San Domenico. Climbing from the square on Via Pizzecolli you will reach the heart of the old city - stop here for a low cost, archetypal Italian lunch - restaurants are cheap and great value for money.

      Eating Out/Nightlife in Ancona

Cooking in Ancona, and indeed the whole Marche region, is very much steeped in peasant tradition and remains simple and honest - Marchigiano cuisine is very much influenced by mamma's cooking and is without pretension. The freshest and best seasonal and local produce is used to create wholesome and comforting dishes, meals that can be found at low cost in many of the restaurants in Ancona. The budget diner will be pleased with the reasonable and even low cost of a generous lunch or dinner in Ancona - this is not a city of overpriced trendy eateries.
