See: Dubrovnik's magnificent medieval City Walls have to be the highlight of any visit to the UNESCO-listed old town – walk a complete circuit around the ramparts, affording stunning vistas over the terracotta rooftops and out to sea. Afterwards, wander the pedestrian-only stone alleys to step back through the centuries – check out the City Museum inside the Baroque Rector's Palace (no website) to see how local aristocrats once lived, the Maritime Museum (no website) to trace the city's sea faring history, and the Franciscan Monastery to see the pretty cloister and the pharmacy, one of the oldest in Europe.

Nearby, look in at War Photo Ltd a slick contemporary gallery devoted to photo journalism from war zones around the world, recalling the damage the city suffered during the Croatian war of independence.

And for a bird’s eye view over old town, ride the Dubrovnik Cable Carto the peak of Mount Srđ, where you’ll find a viewing platform with binoculars, a café-restaurant and a gift shop.

Shop: Dubrovnik's most memorable shopping experience remains the open-air market on Gundulićeva Poljana (mornings only), where stall holders ply fresh fruit and vegetables, local cheeses and hand-made souvenirs such as lace and lavender bags.

Other than this, the old town is becoming a hive for pricey designer stores, such as Mariawhich stocks clothing and accessories by internationally-renowned names from the world of fashion, and Michal Negrindedicated to the whimsical creations of its namesake, an Israeli designer known for her Victorian-style dresses and jewellery. To shop for original one-off pieces by young Croatian designers, look in at the tiny Modni Kantun (no website). And for menswear, Croata does its own line in silk ties – the tie is said to have been invented in Croatia.

For inexpensive handmade gifts, try Medusawhere you’ll find olive-oil based cosmetics and candleholders made from white stone from the Dalmatian island of Brač.

Eat: Dalmatia is renowed for its excellent fresh seafood, fished straight from the Adriatic. To try some of the best, visit Proto with a lovely upper-level vine-draped terrace dating back to 1886, or take a waterside table overlooking the harbour at Lokanda Peskarija to feast on inexpensive whitebait and mussels.

If seafood’s not your thing, visit Oliva Pizzeria for delicious pizzas baked in a brick oven, or try Taj Mahal for Bosnian charcoal-grilled meat specialities.

Vegetarians should track down Nishta for flavoursome meat-free dishes packed with fragrant spices and fresh herbs, with inspiration from Mexico, India and Thailand.

Drink: Many people's favourite summertime drinking venue is Buža a make-shift open-air bar on the rocks above the sea, just outside the medeival walls. In the old town, D'Vino is a cosy wine bar offering quality local wines by the glass as well as wine tasting ‘flights’. The long-standing Hard Jazz Cafe Trubadur (no website) hosts occassional live music on a small stage out front, while Katie O'Connor's Irish Pubserves draught beers in a vaulted stone cellar.

Through summer only, EastWest is a see-and-be-seen beach club just outside the city walls offering pricey drinks and DJ sets after sunset, while Gil's Pop Lounge is an outrageously expensive cocktail bar set within the stone ramparts, overlooking the old harbour.

Stay: Dubrovnik has more than its fair share of 5-star hotels, with glamorous retreats such as the 19-room Pučić Palace furnished with antiques in the old town, the ultra-slick Villa Dubrovnik boasting contemporary minimalist rooms and suites  with sea views and balconies, the cliffside Hotel Bellevue with its own beach and spa, and the plush Hotel Kazbek occupying an old stone villa on Lapad peninsular (opposite the port).

Good mid-range options include the 3-star Hotel Berkeley with a range of rooms, studios and self-catering apartments (ideal for families) plus a small outdoor pool (added in summer 2011), close to the port, and 3-star Hotel Stari Grad with eight rooms and an amazing roof terrace where breakfast is served, in the old town.

On a budget? Fresh Sheets Hostel in the old town offers comfy beds in dorms plus a warm welcome.

Walk: The 2-km circuit of the city walls is the must-do walk here. Besides this, an amble along the coast will reveal several secluced beaches, the biggest being Lapad Beach in Lapad Bay – be sure to bring a towel, a swimming costume and suncream. Or, take a taxi-boar from the old harbour to the tiny islet of Lokrum to wander through the dense botanical garden, complete with peacocks, before swimming off the rocks.

Get Out: The tiny green islet of Lokrum can also be visited as part of a half-day sea kayaking tour with Adria Adventure – and remember, paddling will do wonders for your torso. Alternatively, Blue Planet based on Lapad peninsular, arranges scuba diving trips, as well as diving instruction to those with no previous experience.

Out-of-town trips include a visit to the lovely car-free Elafiti islands, served by regular ferry from Gruž Port, a visit to the nearby seaside resort of Cavtat, and a drive to Ston, on Pelješac peninsular, which is famed for its amazing fortification sytsem, linking the two tiny towns of Mali Ston and Veli Ston, as well as its eateries serving fresh oysters and mussels.

Listen: From late-Jun to early-Jul, the Dubrovnik Opera Festivalsees the courtyard of Rector’s Palace host after-dark arias.

However, the biggest event on the local calender is the Dubrovnik Summer Festival held annually from mid-Jul to late-Aug. Expect internationally renowned musicians performing on idyllic open-air stages in the old town – past names include The Dubliners, Steve Hacket (former guitarist with Genesis), and the Vienna String Quartet.

From late-Aug through to early-Sep, Julian Rachlin & Friends Festival of Chamber Musicsees more world-class classical musicians gathering together for evening performances - actor John Malkovich is a regular participant too.

Avoid: In the old town, the narrow street of Prijeko is packed with small restaurants – however many are overpriced and geared up specifically to tour groups.
