A handy guide to Turkey:

If you feel like ditching the usual tourist holiday destinations and you’re in search of something completely unique and different, you can’t get better than Turkey!  Turkey offers visitors fantastic cuisine, a variety of popular resorts, snow covered mountains, a choice of four different seas, sun and fantastic beaches in a paradise like setting, as well as a whole variety of historical wonders, ancient ruins and buildings to explore due to their extensive history.  Plus, if you want to combine your beach getaway with some culture and adventure there are a number of outdoor activities to choose from.

A great place to begin your holiday is Istanbul, which is a busy, thriving and diverse city where old-style bazaars and marketplaces mix in with modern shops and buildings.  There are a number of excellent museums to choose from where you will be able to learn more about the city, as well as the country’s rich history.

History lovers will love Ephesus.  Ephesus is a very old site that has been well preserved and dates back to around 12 BC.  In ancient times the sheer size of this city was immense and it was a vital trade centre during the time that the Roman Empire was in power, making it the second most important city in the world at one time.  The Temple of Artemis, one of the original Seven Wonders of the World, was also housed within Ephesus.  To date only around 20% of the ancient city has been excavated.

A trip to the St Sophia Museum, which is also known as Haghia Sophia Museum, is worth making as it is a spectacular sight and definitely one of the most beautiful examples of Byzantine architecture still in existence in the world today.  It was constructed in the sixth century and served as a church and mosque until 1936 when it was converted into a museum.

If lazing around on a beautiful beach is more your thing, head off to Patara beach.  Patara beach is more than 12 miles long and 50 metres wide and is bordered by the warm Mediterranean Sea.

A massive attraction for people throughout history has been Pamukkale, which are a series of geothermic hot spring pools that many claim to have invigorating and healing properties.  Pamukkale is also a World Heritage Site.

When the sun goes down, those people that love the nightlife won’t be left wanting as the cities and beach resorts start to buzz with activity and excitement with a wide variety of clubs, bars and restaurants to choose from.

Turkey is a vast country, which is steeped in history and tradition, that really does have something on offer to suit absolutely any tourist, no matter what you may want from your holiday – whether it’s fantastic shopping, exploring the past, looking for adventure, simply lazing around on the beach or going skiing – it’s all possible due to the country’s abundant natural resources and friendly, passionate people and it will without a doubt be a holiday you’ll remember fondly for the rest of your life!
