Children have a difficult time on longer journeys making it hard for all involved to relax and enjoy your break. Below are some activities and items you might want to suggest to them and practice before travelling on that extra long holiday drive.
Travel Journal This can be any spiral bound notebook (easier to manoeuvre)that is big enough for sticking flowers, pictures and any memories your child wants to add. It is worth getting the bigger notebook esp. for smaller children who cannot write and prefer to draw and stick in things.
I Spy One person picks an object everyone can see and then everyone gets a turn guessing. Whoever guesses becomes the next 'Spy'.
The A-Z Game Find letters on signs and number plates around you. Start with the letter 'a' with the aim to be the first person to get to 'z'. You can also use numbers for a shorter game. Once a letter (number) has been spotted it cannot be 'reused' by another player.
Bug Spotting Not just insects! chose a car type to look out for, certain colour, certain driver- Volkwagon Beetles are especially easy and count them up.
Paper Person Fold a piece of paper over four times ensuring the creases are nice and definite. One person starts by drawing a head on the first space (top of page), next person draws the body (without looking at first drawing) and continue until all the free sections are full. The result will be a mish-mash of all your imaginations.
Vital Entertainment Supplies Colouring books Children's story cds/tapes and books Colourful travel guides (esp. for your destination) Window blinds- provide shade and darkness for sleep Travel Board Games i.e. Snakes and Ladders, Ludo. Picnics and roadway stoppages are important for all the family to rest or burn off that excess energy.
