Things to See/Do in Port Elizabeth
There is plenty for the tourist to do in Port Elizabeth and the surrounding areas. As well as the various historical sites and interesting architectural attractions, there is a huge range of activities available, from relaxing on one of Port Elizabeth's beautiful and notably clean beaches to taking a walk on the wild side in Shamwari Game Reserve, home to all of Africa's famous 'big 5' (Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, Lion and Rhino). There are some wonderful world-class golf courses, and an abundance of water sports facilities with the beautiful warm waters allowing for surfing, swimming, wind-surfing, body boarding, scuba diving, wave-boarding, and any other water sport you can think of!
South Africa is still a relatively cheap country to visit, however in the more established tourist areas prices are higher. However, sticking to a tight budget is relatively easy - just investigate different prices and look for restaurants, golf courses and safari parks where you will pay less for much the same experience.
Eating Out/Nightlife in Port Elizabeth
South African food is very meat-orientated, with fantastic steak available at low cost, as well as cheap but unusual local meats - Impala, Springbok, Ostrich and Buffalo can all appear on Menus.
There is lovely seafood available in Port Elizabeth, and usually at a reasonable price. Depending on your budget, there are some wonderful high-end restaurants, but you may be just as happy with some middle range eateries offering delicious, cheap traditional fare. Portions tend to be generous so you should be satisfied! Lots of resorts offer buffet breakfasts and dinners (often Braii, which is a traditional South African barbeque) serving many different sausages and meats accompanied by vegetables, salads and potjie - pronounced poykee - a traditional stew named after the heavy cast iron pot it is cooked in. These can be great value and, as you can eat as much as you like, are definitely satisfying!
Alcohol is generally inexpensive; spirits are as cheap as 50 cent per measure. South African wine and local beer is also very cheap. The nightlife is lively with a great selection of bars and clubs for you to dance the night away.
