See: Deciding what to see during your visit to Tampa is a real quandary. There are so many Tampa Florida attractions! Most people think of amusement parks when they think Florida and Tampa fits the bill. Go to Busch Gardens and take a jeep ride through the Serengeti, let the kids play in the Sesame Street Safari of Fun or ride the BEST roller coasters in the world. If you visit during the summer pack your bathing suit and go right next door for a day at Adventure Island. We can’t ignore our 2 star animal attractions though! The Lowry Park Zoo won a Top 10 Zoo’s in the US award from Parent’s Magazine and the Florida Aquarium will give you an up close and personal education on the unique ecosystem of Tampa Bay.
Ybor City is Tampa’s Latin Quarter and is the epicenter of our Cuban and Italian heritage. Head for Ybor to see Cigar Rolling and stay for some Flamenco dancing demonstrations at the Columbia Restaurant. In between stroll the brick streets past some of the most unique eating and dining experiences in Tampa.
Shop: There’s something for every style of shopper in Tampa Bay. You can stick with tradition higher end retail at the International Plaza near Tampa International Airport or stroll the streets of Hyde Park Village area. If you’re a bargain hunter, take a road trip to the Premium Outlets in Ellenton. We love more of the local, eclectic shopping experience at one of the Saturday Markets at Ybor City, Hyde Park Village or right in downtown Tampa.
Eat: Tampa is a heavenly spot for foodies! Our Spanish heritage is evident if you dine at the Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City or enjoy tapas and live music and upscale casual atmosphere at Ceviche’s (BEST Sangria) in our SoHo District. Sit on the water at Jackson’s Bistro on Harbor Island downtown and enjoy the fabulous weather or dine at one of the best steakhouses in the Southern US, Bern’s Steak House.
If you crave a little more of the beach style that Florida is so famous for, there are some great restaurants in the Clearwater Beach area. Our favorite is O’Maddy’s in nearby Gulfport. Sit with a view of the sunset and order a grouper sandwich, the browse the shops in this artist colony community.
Drink: The party scene is alive and well in Tampa. After the family scene shuts down in Ybor City the streets come alive with 20 somethings at the hottest hip hop clubs and live music venues in the state. Check out Gaspar’s Grotto or the Bricks of Ybor right on 7th Avenue for atmosphere or S. Howard Avenue, Soho, for a street full of great spots to get a beer and enjoy the crowds. If you want a little classier after dinner spot for a cocktail, try Aja in Channelside Bay Plaza or the Blue Martini.
Stay: There are two great areas to stay in the Tampa area, depending on what your plans are.
- Riverwalk – Tampa’s new Riverwalk has attracted some big hotel names and provides access to the best Tampa has to offer. Stay at the Westin Hotel on Harbor Island or the Marriott convention center hotel and you’ll not only get beautiful water and city views, but be able to hop on the Trolley car to Channelside and Ybor City.
- Tampa Airport Hotels – the ones we like best give you quick access to the beaches of Clearwater and St. Petersburg as well as being just 10 minutes from Downtown and 20 minutes from Busch Gardens.
Walk: Tampa’s Riverwalk is a cobblestone stretch that starts at the Tampa History Center, which is a must see, and meanders along the channel between Harbor Island and the Convention Center. Lined with boat slips, restaurants and hotels, it’s a lovely urban stroll. Join the Riverwalk farther North and you’ll have stunning views of the University of Tampa and the Tampa Art Museum along Curtis Hixon Park. Bayshore Boulevard is also one of our favorite ways to spend a morning. This 4.5 mile sidewalk stretches between the Bay and some of the most beautiful homes in Tampa. If you’re lucky, you’ll be visited by the dolphins that frequent the sea wall area.
Get Out: Get out on the waterways of Tampa Bay and the Hillsborough River during your trip. Get a look at the sea side of Tampa with Tampa Bay Sailing Tours on the Noshooz or take the Eco-Tour from the Florida Aquarium. You can also walk the boardwalk through swampland at Lettuce Lake Park, then rent a canoe to take you down the Hillsborough River. Tampa Bay lives on the water.
Listen: The real story of Tampa Bay’s music scene though is our local, independent artists. There are constant open mic nights at many of our coffee shop sized venues that give you an up close look at the next big stars as well as free concerts in Curtis Hixon Park on the Hillsborough River.
If you’re looking for a more popular musical vacation Tampa is a common stop on concert tours of pop, rock and rap music heavyweights from around the US. Our confusingly named “1-800-ASK-GARY” Amphitheater gives you the chance to sit outside and listen to top acts while the St. Pete Time’s Forum and Straz Center offer more intimate venues.
Avoid: Sunburn! Many people from colder climates just don’t realize that even if it’s not hot outside you can still get a burn that will keep you away from the fun for a spell. Also avoid spending all your time in one spot. Head for Busch Gardens, the beach or downtown, but make sure you see as much as possible.
