San Francisco Mini Guide
San Francisco International Airport is a major international airport situated 21 km (roughly 13 miles) south of San Francisco, California. The airport serves as the cities principal gateway for tourists visiting from elsewhere in the United States as well as Asia, Europe and Australia.
San Francisco is a city in a league of its own when compared to the ruthlessness of New York or the conformist plasticity of Los Angeles. Everything about San Francisco is different and original, from the famously hilly streets to the white fog that swallows the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset. The city has long been synonymous with diversity, and is known as a magnet for counterculture in America. An arcadia for beatniks in the 50's, Hippies in the 60's and the gay population in the 70's, San Francisco still has an atmosphere of acceptance and a palpable 'live and let live' philosophy.
Things to see/do in San Francisco
San Francisco is jam-packed with things to see and do, with many low cost and free attractions on offer for those trying to see San Francisco on a budget. The iconic Golden Gate Bridge is probably San Francisco's most spectacular and renowned structure. Open 24/7, except for the occasional Sunday morning to accommodate an event, it is free to access by bicycle or on foot, and has a $5 toll for cars. There are observation areas on both ends of the bridge. It can be cold, and winds are often high, so don't leave yourself exposed in just a tee shirt or you may be shivering too much to enjoy the views.
The Golden Gate Park is a lush refuge in the urban sprawl of San Francisco, and another attraction ideally suited to those adhering to a strict budget. Bigger than Central Park in New York, it boasts museums, windmills, a Japanese Tea Garden, a Shakespearean Garden, a carousel, a population of Bison, and much more. With such a selection of attractions it is worth doing your homework before you go to the park - renting a bike is the best way to get around, however in the summer a free shuttle bus operates.
San Francisco is also home to the world's almost-twistiest street! Second only to snake alley in Iowa, it may not be as bendy but is certainly prettier, and definitely worth seeing. If you're lucky (?), you may even get to witness the annual BYOBW (Bring your own big wheel) race, where any number of participants hurtle down the street on little plastic tricycles. A good view of the street is available from the Powell & Hyde cable car line - indeed the cable cars are attractions in themselves and should be used at least once during your trip.
Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill Angel Island is an art deco structure containing a number of murals that can be viewed free of charge (another great attraction that can contribute to a comprehensive but very cheap visit to the city). Sensational 360° views of San Francisco are afforded from the observation deck on the top of the tower. For more great views, Twin Peaks is very close to the centre of the city and offers a great vista.
Alamo Square is home to the famous 'painted ladies' that have become so emblematic of San Francisco. These multicoloured, fairytale Victorian houses should be seen, being such an integral symbol of the city.
Alcatraz Island is fascinating, and a trip to see this infamous old federal prison is a major tourist activity in San Francisco. Booking a spot on the Ferry is necessary, and relatively cheap - but be warned, only one company is commissioned to operate tours, and tickets bought from unlicensed sources may be counterfeit and will not be accepted.
Fisherman's Wharf is a tourist trap, however makes an interesting addition to your travel itinerary nonetheless. An aquarium, a carousel, sea lions, street performances, a submarine… the list of attractions (and gimmicks) in this area is astounding. Being a tourist trap, of course, things are not as cheap in this part of the city as they are in others, and the attractions are not as low cost - however with the wealth of budget-friendly attractions available throughout San Francisco, it may not hurt your funds too much to have a little splurge here!
