Mexico City Mini Guide
Mexico City International Airport is also known as Benito Juaréz International Airport, and is the main airport serving Mexico City. The airport is not only Mexico's, but also Latin America's busiest airport - unsurprising since Mexico City (the country's capital) is one of the world's largest and most highly populated cities.
Mexico City is a hotbed of people, noise, and activity. Many contrasting elements occur in the city - all at once it is high-living and poverty-stricken, glamorous and gritty, a buzzing Latin party and a drab, overcrowded concrete jungle. Lying 2200 meters above sea level, the city is an immense urban sprawl - both high enough in altitude and vast enough in size to make you dizzy.
The sheer scale of the city means that it is largely decentralized, with different areas of the city having their own specific downtown area. The different areas of Mexico City are divided into around 250 'colonias', and it is wise to have some idea of what colony you want to get to when you are moving around within the city.
Things to see/do in Mexico City
It would be possible to explore Mexico City for months without running out of things to do - the plazas, museums, monuments, buildings, murals, and galleries are multitudinous. There are of course some particularly recognizable and emblematic sights and attractions throughout the city, and the following are just a small handful of Mexico City's highlights.
The Ángel de la Independencia is perhaps the most familiar icon of Mexico City. A 45 metre column, situated on Reforma Avenue, the monument commemorates Mexico's independence from Spain. It can look particularly pretty when lit up in the evenings.
The Zócalo is Mexico City's main square and home to the Templo Mayor (the ruins of the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan), a wonderful and imposing Cathedral, and the National Palace, which contains Diego Rivera's intricate murals detailing Mexico's fight for independence. Free admission means the Palace is a budget-friendly attraction, while the low cost of admission into the Templo and it's museum makes it a cheap but fascinating excursion.
Chapultepec Park and Zoo is considered by many to be the centerpiece of Mexico City. An urban oasis with free admission, the park is a haven for those wanting to separate themselves from the concrete landscape of Mexico City for an afternoon. There are a number of cheap and free attractions within the park, such as the city zoo as well as a wealth of museums and monuments. A picnic in the park is a cheap and chilled way to enjoy a meal in Mexico City.
Football is serious business in Mexico City, in fact the city has played host to the FIFA World Cup on two separate occasions. A trip to see the Estadio Azteca is a must for soccer fans.
As we said - Mexico City is a city so large and rich in history and culture that it cannot even begin to be broached in a mini guide. A guide book is probably the best way to tailor your Mexican holiday to your own tastes and budget.
Eating out/nightlife in Mexico City
Mexico City by night is a thrilling place - the whole city seems to pulse to a Latin beat. For a truly Latin American experience, visit a salsa or flamenco club, down some tequila and see how long your feet can keep up with the music. Clubs and drinks are not always cheap - you will pay less in the more down-to-earth spots around the city - but in your search for a cheap night out, be careful not to wander into some of the less desirable areas!
Eating out in Mexico can be heaven or hell. If you have a weak stomach, and if you are in any doubt as to the hygienic standards of a restaurant, DO NOT eat there (this is particularly true of the street vendors, however low cost an option it may be)! The wanton use of chili coupled with often-questionable preparation methods could see more feeble digestive systems in quite a bit of trouble. However, it is easy to eat well and safely (and on a budget) in Mexico City - just keep your eyes and nose open. Try some of the wonderful local dishes - the Mexican meal you get delivered to your door at home will most likely not compare to the real thing in the big city.
