A Short Guide to Newbury

Newbury is a bustling town located in south England on the Kennet Canal. This town is famous for its racecourse, located not far outside of the town limits. Every year thousands of people visit the area to enjoy the atmosphere and soak up the beautiful surroundings. Newbury Tourist Information Centre is located on the Wharf near the Market Place.

As the largest town in west Berkshire, Newbury is the centre of trade in the area. Dating from 1079, people have flocked to the town to meet up with others and trade their goods. Visitors can enjoy the remnants of history and take a trip along the Kennet and Avon Canal on one of the beautiful barges that travel the canal. Shoppers will enjoy the selection of craft shops and small traders as well as a wide range of well-known outlets. A farmers market takes place the first Sunday of the month in Market Place. Look out for the small artisan producers for that special memento of Newbury. During the summer months there is a carnival and some other outdoor events held in and around Newbury town.

There are some fantastic National Trust buildings in the area including the Basildon House and Ashdown House. Basildon House, a beautiful Palladian mansion located 25 km from Newbury, is renowned for its beautiful plasterwork and interior design. The property featured in the recent film, 'Pride and Prejudice'. Visitors can see costumes, paintings and tapestries that have been restored. Ashdown House, located less than 25 km to the north west of Newbury, was dedicated to Elizabeth of Bohemia, the Winter Queen and visitors can view of the surrounding countryside from the roof top. An unusual selection awaits visitors to 'The Living Rainforest' located in Hampstead Norreys (Norris). This is an international conservation charity that educates the public about the wonderful diversity of the world's rainforests. Garden displays, fascinating wildlife and education features make this a great place for children and adults alike. Car hire is a great way of getting out and about the Newbury region and gives visitors the opportunity to experience Berkshire in their own way.

Newbury Racecourse is located to the south east of the town close to the M3 and the M4. There are frequent meetings throughout the year; the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup and the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes are two of the more famous races at the course.
