      Istanbul International Airport Mini Guide

      Istanbul Mini Guide

The city of Istanbul, once called Constantinople, is an old one - the remains of many ancient civilizations can bee seen throughout the city. Istanbul is unique in that it straddles two continents, Asia and Europe. The tourist industry in Turkey is heavily reliant on Istanbul as a destination, and the city is popular among both holiday and visiting business people alike.

      Things to See/Do in Istanbul

The city has a wide range of historical and architecturalattractions to visit - perhaps one of the more spectacular is the Hagia Sophia on Sultanahmet Square. Originally a basilica, this architectural masterpiece is a mammoth construction that is now a fascinating museum.

Another itinerary 'must' for your visit to Istanbul is an excursion to a Turkishbath. Prices for these are varied depending on the Bath, but a visit to one of the Baths located in the city should be factored into your budget - they are a quintessential Turkish experience and a really enjoyable and relaxing day out.

The Grand Bazaar is home to an estimated 4400 shops, crammed into the covered walkways. It is a veritable labyrinth of interesting and cheap wares - although you will likely pay less for items in some of the smaller bazaars, as the Grand Bazaar has become more expensive to take advantage of wealthy tourists. Budget shoppers will be delighted with the choice and lowprice of goods on sale at the bazaar.

      Eating out/Nightlife in Istanbul

Turkish cuisine is focused largely on natural, flavourful and aromatic ingredients, and involves an abundance of vegetables as well as a lot of lamb. Delicious fresh seafood can be found on most menus. As religion prohibits most Turks from consuming Pork, it is unlikely you will find much of it in the city. Turkish kebabs are popular and extremely satisfying. You may also like to try 'borek' a pastry containing either cheese, vegetables, meat, or all three.

Eating out on a budget in Istanbul is easy, with many low cost restaurants offering cheap and delicious authentic Turkish meals. There is also a good selection of western and international cuisine in the city for anyone who is not too enamoured with Turkish cookery.

Nightlife in Istanbul is lively, however it is worth noting that many clubs don't get busy until quite late. There is a great choice of clubs and live music venues, and many establishments incorporate restaurants too. Beyoglu is notorious for its vibrant nightlife, and is full of bars and cafés that serve relatively cheap drinks.
