See:The Vasa Museum is not to be missed! The museum is built around a warship which sank in 1628 and brought back to the surface in 1961 in near pristine condition. Nearby you will find Skansen- a park, open-air cultural museum as well as Stockholm’s zoo. A great place to see Swedish history, traditions and wildlife.

Stockholm’s newest museum is Fotografiska which is dedicated to the art of photography. It has quickly become very popular after a series of amazing exhibitions. Another popular must-see is the changing of the guard at theRoyal Palace which takes place at 12:15 daily except on Sunday when it is at 13:15.

Shop: The glitzy department store NK is well worth a visit, whether for shopping or just admiring the surroundings. Around the corner you will find the pedestrian street Biblioteksgatan which is the place to go to find Swedish fashion! Looking for something more funky? Visit the SoFo neighbourhood on the island of Södermalm for some unique fashion, design & music shopping.

When in Sweden do as the Swedes and visit the world’s largest IKEA in the suburb of Kungens Kurva. Of course, you can’t leave the country without buying some souvenirs. Head to the street Västerlånggatan inGamla Stan (the Old Town) to get your fill of stuffed moose, postcards and Viking helmets.

Eat: Sweden has come a long way since the Swedish Chef on the Muppets and these days Stockholm has become a culinary hotspot. For a Michelin star dining experience, try chef Mathias Dahlgren’s restaurant of the same name… but be sure you make reservations in advance! If you want to try classic Swedish cuisine then a stop at Prinsen in the downtown area is in order. The restaurant Pelikan in the SoFo district, with its beer hall atmosphere, is a great place for sampling more rustic local cuisine.

The best place for lunch? Östermalm’s Saluhall! A wonderful indoor market (voted one of the top ten in the world) where you are sure to get the freshest seafood. The Swedish smorgasbord, filled with local delicacies like herring and meatballs, is world famous. Stop by the Grand’s Veranda to give this a try!

Drink: Nothing beats sipping a cocktail while gazing out over Stockholm and there are two bars that can provide this experience: Gondolen and Och Himlen Därtill. Lisbeth Salander’s favourite pub- Kvarnen- is also a favourite with the locals. You’ll recognize this place if you’ve read the Millenium trilogy! Luckily, most of the top notch bars & nightclubs, like RicheSturekompagniet and Spy Bar, are located in the same area… the Stureplan district. In the summertime many bars move outdoors to take advantage of the long, sunny evenings. Experience this by visiting the floating bar Mälarpaviljongen on the shores of Kungsholmen.

Stay: Stockholm is experiencing a boom in tourism and new hotels are popping up all over the city. There really is something for every budget. For old world opulence the grand dame of Stockholm hotels, the Grand Hotel, is the place to stay. Stockholm’s first boutique hotel, Hotel Rival, is owned by Benny Andersson of ABBA and is located in the vibrant Södermalm district. Hotel Skeppsholmen is a nice design hotel with some great history as it once was the barracks for the Swedish military.

For a smaller budget, but still adventurous, you have the Af Chapman- a sailing ship built in 1888, now permanently moored in Stockholm harbour and the home of a youth hostel. If you are planning on staying out near Arlanda airport, but want something a little different than a normal airport hotel… try Jumbo Stay, an old jumbo jet that has been refitted as a hotel/hostel.

Walk: Everywhere! Stockholm is a city perfect for walking. Head to Gamla Stan and stroll the cobblestone streets and soak up the history or else take the ferry to the island of Djurgården and walk around the aforementioned Skansen park. Or if you are in the mood for a nature walk then stroll around Djurgården itself- the world’s first city national park. A more organized walk might be more to your liking. In this case, theStockholm City Museum offers guided walking tours with different themes including ABBA and Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy.

Get Out: Many people don’t know that there is an archipelago of about 30,000 islands at Stockholm’s front door which is truly one the world’s natural wonders. During the summer you can take a half or full day boat tour or else choose an island to spend the day on. Another summer boat excursion takes you to Birka which was once an important Viking merchant town. There are several interesting and historical towns near to Stockholm and worth a day trip such as Sigtuna and Uppsala. Stockholm has two UNESCO World Heritage sites on the outskirts of the city: the royal palace Drottningholm and the forest cemetery Skogskyrkogården.

Listen: Most shows and musicals are in Swedish, but there are options where language is not a factor. Catch an opera at the beautiful Royal Opera House or see a classic concert at Konserthuset, the venue where the Nobel Prizes are awarded each year. Larger concerts with international artists are usually held at Globen, which has become a Stockholm landmark. Swedes do love their Eurovision, which ABBA once won, and a visit to Naglo Vodka Bar will prove just how much…

Avoid: Hailing a taxi on the street! It is an anomaly… Sweden is extremely organized and corruption-free, except when it comes to taxis which are not regulated. This means that small taxi companies can legally charge double what the larger companies do as long as their prices are listed somewhere within the car. Have hotels, restaurants and shops call you a taxi to avoid this, or stick to the large companies like Taxi Stockholm.
