Lanzarote: Top 4 Drives
Lanzarote’s dramatic volcanic landscape makes for some exciting and memorable drives. Here we’ve selected four geographically diverse routes to ensure that you make the most of your experience on this magical island.
Drive 1: Southern Coast Delights
By travelling along the southern road in the direction of Yaiza, you’ll pass the pretty villages of Tias and Mácher.
On the way to Uga, which specialises in seafood-like smoked salmon, you’ll find a side road leads to the fabulous marina of Puerto Calero. Having built up an appetite from all that sea-air, it’s a good idea to stop at the village of Yaiza, where a visit to La Era Restaurant is a must, if only to sample a typical dish from the Canaries. After a hearty feed, it’s off to El Golfo, famous for its stunning green lake, Los Hervideros, Las Salinas de Janubio, Playa Blanca or the Papagayo beach for some rest and relaxation.
Drive 2: Vineyards and Volcanoes
Having left Yaiza, take the road leading to Montanas del Fuego (the Fire Mountains). This is one of the most recent areas of volcanic activity on Lanzarote and boasts one of the island’s main attractions- The National Park of Timanfaya. Alternatively, passing back through Yaiza, it’s a nice idea to head for La Geri, noted for its spectacular vineyard views. Taking inspiration from the enveloping landscape, head for the nearby village Masdache, where you’ll find the “El Grifo” wine museum and shop situated on one of the oldest wine cellars on the island.
Drive 3: Art and Cultural
Following the same direction, you’ll arrive at the “Monumento al Campesino”, which is located in the middle of the island. It’s a monument dedicated to local artist César Manrique. From there it’s a good idea to head to Tinajo, passing through the villages of Mozaga, Tao and Tiagua on the way. At Tinajo there’s a wealth of interesting cultural and historical sites to be explored including the Agricultural Museum, which encompasses the Wine and Handmade Art Centre. Not to be missed either is “El Patio”- La Vegueta and Mancha Blanca where the patron saint of the island Virgin of the Volcanoes is worshipped.
Another place of interest is Villa de Teguise, known as the historical capital of the island. Cobbled streets, churches, convents and mansions-reminders of the island’s colonial heritage are everywhere to be seen here. It’s also a great place to invest in some local handicrafts. One of the best days to visit is Sunday, when the local traders lay out their market stalls.
Drive 4: Valleys and Caves
Heading out north from the island capital Arrecife, in the direction of Orzola, we pass Tahiche, where the Fundación César Manrique is located, as is Guatiza-a location famous for its cactus plantation. Continuing on from here, it’s possible to reach the “Cueva de Los Verdes” and “Jameos del Agua” caves.
Passing back through Arrieta, you’ll encounter the lush green village of Haria known as the ‘valley of a thousand palm trees.’ Heading along the same route, you’ll come to “El Mirador del Rio”. From here unrivalled views of the island of Graciosa can be enjoyed.
