Granada Airport Mini Guide
Federico Garcia Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport is more commonly known as Granada Airport and is the airport serving the Spanish regions of Granada and Jaén. Located near to Chauchina and Santa Fe, the airport lies around 15km west of Granada and 100km (62 ½ miles) south of Jaén. The airport handles traffic from a number of budget and low cost airlines offering cheap flights to the area, and as such the airport is busy with budget and thrifty travellers availing of the cheap transport.
Granada Mini Guide
Granada is located at the foot of the Sierre Nevada, which is Spain's highest mountain. It is the capital of the Andalucia region of Spain with a wealth of attractions, sights and activities to lure tourists to the area and ensure a healthy tourist trade. It is not as heavily saturated with tourists as the prime Andalucian tourist destinations such as Malaga and Marbella, which can be a particular blessing during the hot summer months, especially for those who find intense crowds and heat a little tough to take.
Things to See/Do in Granada
Located on top of al-Sabika to the west of the city of Granada is The Alhambra. The Alhambra is a historically important and very intriguing ancient citadel, fortress and palace that was home to the Muslim kings of Granada when the city was under Moorish rule. Described as 'a pearl set emeralds', the Alhambra is a brightly coloured complex set in verdant, rich green surrounding forestry. Daytime visits are cheap at €10 admission, and should certainly be factored into a budget. Discount prices are available for seniors and children under 8 can visit for free.
Sacromonte is a large hill opposite the Alhambra in Granada that has become famous for its caves that were once the dwelling place of marginal members of Spanish society, namely gypsies. Now open to the public, the caves are used as venues for flamenco performances and are particularly atmospheric in the evenings.
Eating Out/Nightlife in Granada
Nightlife in Granada is not as wild and anonymous as in Spain's bigger cities and resort areas, however this means that a night out in Granada is often more welcoming, enjoyable - and cheap - for tourists who like a more personal and convivial social scene. A local brewery in Granada means great, cheap beer - ideal for those with a budget who want a low cost night out. Downtown Granada and the west city have some great bars and clubs that are recommended for an enjoyable night out.
Tapas is as prevalent here as in every other town and city in Spain, if not more so, and is a tasty and thrifty way to eat out and experience authentic Spanish flavors and ingredients. There is a sumptuous blend of Mediterranean and Arabic flavours in Granada cuisine, making for wonderfully tasty tapas. Best of all, tapas in many of the Granada bars is free with drinks (catering to the large student population in the city who want cheap food and drink), so budget nights out are well within reach of the thrifty traveller.
