Almeria International Airport is situated 10km east of the city centre close to the AL-12 dual carriage-way. Almeria International Airport offers a range of facilities and shops including a fine rooftop café, perfect for cheap last minute snacks.Things To See/Do:
Walking through Nicolás Salmeron Park along the seashore offers a free unrivalled view of the marina and port. It's impossible to ignore Almeria Cathedral in the centre of the city, as well as the churches of Santiago the Elder and San Pedro. Follow a guide or explore the city's ancient walls at your own leisure.
Itchy feet? A drive to the nearby Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Reserve is one option. Here it is possible to enjoy white sandy beaches and nature trails at the first marine-land reserve in Andalusia. Another destination worth visiting by car is nearby Sierra Nevada.
Eating Out/Nightlife/Accomodation:
Almeria's fertile lands produce cheap home-grown ingredients which feature heavily in the local specialities. Fish is also a major feature on Almerian menus, given the city's coastal location. One way to get a taste for the local culture is to sample the local specialities like "ajo colorao" a stew made with potatoes, red peppers, cod, egg, sausages, garlic and olive oil. 'Breca a la uva'-Pandora fish with grapes and 'rape a la barraca'- monkfish with leek and mushrooms are other local favourite dishes. The area around Avenida de Frederico Garcia offers plenty of restaurants and cafés to choose from.
Almeria has a buzzing nightlife with a host of music bars, discos and pubs springing up in the heart of the city. There's always a good choice in terms of atmosphere and music. Getting around the city at night is easy as there are a range of bars and summer terraces conveniently located around the Fraga Iribarne and Concepcion Arenal area.
It's easy to find pubs and discos to suit all sorts at districts like Real, Martines Campos, Trajano, Pedro Luque, Eduardo Perez, el paseo de Almería andl Nicolás Salmerón park.
In summer, fiestas and festivals take place at El Zapillo (sailor district). Almeria offers a range of both luxury and budget accommodation. Good deals are to be had for travellers on a budget at hotels such as Hostal Sevilla, located at Calle de Granada 23, which has basic facilities including a TV and bath.
For those looking for a little more luxury, Hotel Residencia La Perla, located just off Puerta de Purchena has single and double rooms in the mid price range.
DRIVES AND DAY TRIPS FROM ALMERIA
Spain's Almeria province is a massively popular European tourist destination, and understandably so, with it's 200 miles of beautiful and diverse coastal landscape and its highly developed (but not over-developed) tourist resorts. There are superb tourist resorts throughout the region, but these are thankfully balanced with untouched areas of natural splendor, parts of the region that make for some wonderfully private and 'off the beaten path' day trips and excursions from main tourist areas.
With low cost car rental from Argus Car Hire, you have the freedom to drive to any number of wonderful destinations in style and at your own pace, without too much impact on your budget. The following are two of the top day trips/excursions that can easily be made in the Almeria region;
Tabernas Desert & Mini Hollywood
The Tabernas Desert is the sole semi-desert region in Europe, with an arid, barren landscape that is reminiscent of America's Wild West - so much so that it has long been a popular destination with spaghetti-western filmmakers. Just 26km from Almeria city is the little village of Tabernas (or 'Mini Hollywood'), nestled between the Sierra de Filabres and the Sierra de Alhamilla. Stars such as Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson rode into town to film scenes here, and film-buffs may recognize sets from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Indiana Jones, The Magnificent Seven, Lawrence of Arabia and A Fistful of Dollars (sets which have now been incorporated into theme-parks).
Stagecoach rides, a zoo, a saloon-style watering hole, and wonderful live shows (shoot-outs and show-downs) will make for a fun-filled day for the whole family. Admission is quite cheap, but if you are trying to be thrifty it may be more budget friendly to bring food and refreshments with you, as it is inevitably cheaper to buy at a supermarket than in a remote tourist trap! However, food in this part of the world is generally quite good value for money, with low cost menus and generous portions.
Cabo de Guata-Níjar National Park
The Cabo de Gata-Nijar National Park covers 460 square miles in Southeast Spain. It is a nature reserve that includes the Sierra de Cabo de Gata mountain range, the town of Carboneras, and a large area of marine reserve. A tour of the area from the city of Almeria is very doable with the freedom of your rental car, and will allow you to witness some wonderful and unusual natural sights, flora and fauna.
Coastal sand-dunes, beautiful beaches, imposing cliffs, salt-pans and marshes, dry river beds and craggy mountains make up the inhospitable landscape, but surprisingly there are also abundant rare plants and much endangered wildlife to be seen in the region. Monk seal, flamingo, heron, puffin, peregrine falcon, kestrel, eagle, wall-lizard, grass snake, and Lataste's viper all inhabit the park, as well as many more.
The Marine reserve is also home to an astounding number of rare and unusual species, and the pristine and unspoilt waters allow for some wonderful scuba diving and underwater photography. If budget doesn't allow this, there's always the cheap but (almost) equally as satisfying option of snorkeling. Sea kayaking is relatively low cost here, and a popular inland sport is mountain biking.
