A Guide to the Sunshine Island's Hottest Bays
1.Best for Sun Worshipping:Playa De La Arena, Santiago Del Teide
The exotic black sands of Playa De La Arena are situated just a short drive from the pretty fishing village of Puerto Santiago. Playa De La Arena is purported to receive the most sunlight in Tenerife, so you’re guaranteed to get a good colour here. However, risk of sun damage is high so those with fair skin should make sure to cover up with a good sun block. Playa De La Arena is one of the cleanest beaches in Spain and has been awarded Blue Flag status for its high standards, every year since 1989. The beach boasts an excellent range of free facilities including changing rooms, gardens, and showers. It’s also possible to rent sun umbrellas, pedal boats and sun beds locally for a low cost. Cheap snacks and refreshments are also available from bars and restaurants along the seafront.
2.Best for Water Sports: Playa De El Médano, Granadilla
Playa De El Médano is situated on the Grenadilla coast and can be accessed easily by hire car via the TF-1 motorway. The windy conditions of Playa De El Médano facilitate a range of active water sports including windsurfing and surfing. Boards are available for rent locally at a low cost. Meanwhile, guests of the nearby Playa Sur Hotel can avail of cheap lessons.
3.Best for Swimming:Bajamar Pools, La Laguna
The coastal town of Bajamar is situated around 3km from Teiina and is easily accessible by hire car. Bajamar is renowned for its range of natural seawater swimming pools. Those on a tight holiday budget will be impressed by the free admission, with extra facilities such as showers incurring just a low cost. There’s also a small sandy beach on site, as well as a walkway leading to the coast. The coastline is dotted with a good range bars and restaurants, where you’re guaranteed to pay less for high quality seafood.
4.Best for Fishing:Teresitas Beach, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Teresitas Beach is situated close to the fishing precinct of San Andres, just a 7km drive by hire car from Santa Cruz. The beach was given a face-lift in 1973, when golden sand was imported from the Sahara. Fishing trips can be arranged locally for a low cost. Meanwhile hungry day-trippers can avail of cheap catch of the day at the myriad seafood bars dotted along the coast. The beach is tropical in appearance and has been planted with Canary Palms and sea grapes.
5.Most Scenic: Complejo Costa Martínez, Puerto de la Cruz
Designed by Lanzarote artist Cesar Manrique, the Costa Martínez complex combines cutting edge aesthetics with traditional flora and fauna. The ambitious artistic enterprise comprises an artificial lake filled with 27,000 cubic metres of seawater, adult and childrens pools in an environment that blends a native plants with elaborate, original artwork by Cesar Manrique.
