Sierra Nevada Skiing

The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, located in Andalucia, Spain was designated a National Park in 1998. Surprisingly for a ski destination, the range is located in a very southerly position usually associated with sun bathing and swimming in the warm Mediterranean. The close proximity does mean easy access to warmer pursuits in the lower regions (golf anyone?). The rocky landscape of the Sierra Nevada has peaks of more than 3,000 metres in height making it the second highest mountain range in Europe (second only to the Alps). Hundreds of small towns and settlements are dotted in the middle and lower regions of the slopes and it is to these settlements that skiers flock to as soon as the snow season begins.

The most popular of resorts is less than an hour from the beautiful city of Grenada. The snow capped peaks and resort of Sierra Nevada (also known as the village of Pradollano). With more than 60 km of ski runs, lifts and the availability of snowboarding facilities (including a half pipe) all types of snow enthusiasts can enjoy their snow experience in Sierra Nevada. The snow here lasts from November right through to March and, if it needs a little help, there are snow machines to keep the slopes in top condition. Cable cars run to Borreguiles and ski lifts bring the adventurous to the higher, more difficult slopes. The beautiful Veleta Mountain rises above the town, a stunning sight greeting visitors. Many would say the view is even more amazing when doing some cross-country skiing across it. The resort has become a very trendy spot as more and more people escape the confines of city life for a fun weekend surrounded by the stunning mountains and partying in the local cafes and bars (few make it to the slopes before 9 a.m.)
The beautiful landscape of the mountain range is very popular during the warmer months when wanderers explore the deep gorges and the rolling hills in perfect temperatures. Hill walking, mountain biking, paragliding and horse riding are just some of the activities people enjoy; the mountain peaks are quite challenging and good territory for mountaineering and rock climbing.
