Eating Out in Tenerife
Tenerife Cuisine
Dining out during your holiday should ideally be a relaxing, satisfying and memorable experience; after all there is nothing nicer after a day of sightseeing (or even a day of doing nothing but lay about under the sun) than to enjoy a long meal and a bottle (or two) of wine. Tenerife may not be known as one of the world’s top gastronomical hotspots, but it certainly can offer a great range of restaurants serving all kinds of food to suit a myriad of tastes and budgets. From cheap and cheerful snacks for thrifty tourists to more expensive fine dining for those eating without budget constraints, there is sure to be something in Tenerife to please everyone.
While tourists from Britain, Ireland, Germany, France and Holland are all catered for in the Islands many restaurants, it is advisable when in Tenerife to sample the local cuisine. Bursting with flavour and made with the freshest of ingredients, good Tenerife cookery is a joy to experience, and can be cheap enough to let you eat like a king, but stick to a budget.
The regional cooking in Tenerife combines traditional Canarian (Guanche) cooking with influences from elsewhere. Typical dishes include mixed vegetable stews, fish casseroles, fresh sardines, lots of pork and delicious ‘pappas arrugadas’ potatoes. There are many ‘Guachinches’ to be found throughout the island serving real indigenous cooking at cheap prices, ideal for adventurous palates and restricted budgets.
The following are two recommended restaurants in Tenerife, serving a mix of both local and international cuisine, all of which are well worth visiting. You may need to stretch the budget a little bit, but it’s always nice to splash out a little while you are on holiday!
La Estancia
This French-Mediterranean eatery is situated in Chafoya, slightly separate from the bustling tourist-laden areas of Tenerife but still entirely accessible – just five minutes in your hire car from both Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. This is an award-winning gourmet restaurant with a menu that changes according to seasonal ingredients and whatever is available in the markets. Themed nights are often run and add a magical quality to a meal. Dished based on goose and duck liver are prominent, as are exotic meats and delicious fresh seafood.
The restaurant is not as cheap as some of the restaurants you will find right in the thick of the tourist-crowded areas; however what you are paying for is far superior quality and style, as well as a memorable meal (particularly on a themed night). You might not eat here every night if you want budget/cheap eats, but it isn’t astronomically priced either, and is worth visiting.
Los Roques
This is a superb restaurant situated in Los Abrigos that serves wonderful food in lovely surroundings and with spectacular seafront views. It’s very stylish, but don’t worry, there is plenty of substance to back this up. A sumptuous menu of fresh seafood, exotic flavours and luxury ingredients will have your mouth watering, with seafood lovers being particularly well catered to. Vegetarians will probably leave the restaurant feeling hungry, as there is little choice in this regard, however for anyone else a visit is likely to be very satisfying indeed.
This is by no means cheap, being about the same price as a good mid-range restaurant in Ireland/UK. Again, what you pay for is quality, taste, style, and a wonderful memory from your Tenerife holiday.
