Warsaw is Poland's capital city, and with 1.7 million residents is also it's largest. Located on the Vistula river (or Wisla in Polish), Warsaw is not a mainstream tourist destination, however it makes for a cheap and interesting city break, ideal for those who want a low costbudget holiday.

      Things to see in Warsaw

Warsaw is a relatively young city in terms of Poland's history, and many of its older buildings were obliterated during WWII. The Old Town, however, has been painstakingly rebuilt and restored to look as similar as possible to the way it was before the war. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, together with the striking Royal Castle.

      Things to see in Warsaw

The Royal Road originally linked the Royal Castle to the Royal Castle in Wilanów (around 10km in distance), and there are many interesting sites along this route. The Warsaw Uprising Museum in Wola is an interesting if somber commemoration of the victims of Poland's uprising. Cheap admission (a bargain at 1 Euro for adults and free admission on Sundays) means that the attraction will not affect your budget too much.

The city boasts some lovely park areas, including the vast and beautiful Lazienki Royal Gardens. Admission to this park is free, with cheap, low cost admission into some of its museums. The park also hosts some memorable open-air piano recitals at the Memorial to Frederic Chopin in the park. The Field of Mokotów is a large green area with a few pubs and is a nice hang out spot on hot days. A trip to the Palace of Culture is recommended, with panoramic views of the city being afforded from it's top floor.

The city is great for events and festivals, with it's own annual film, jazz, art, science and street art festival. There is a great musical tradition in the city with many events being held throughout the year, and again, the low cost of visiting Warsaw extends to its festivals and concerts meaning budget travelers can enjoy without worry.

      Eating out/nightlife in Warsaw

Even the tightest of budgets should be able to eat well in Warsaw, in the cheap 'milk bars'. These are remnants of communist rule, originally created for the purpose of serving low cost milk-based meals to a poor people. They are very basic, with very cheap prices to match (soup and a main course may cost as little as €2). Even if your budget allows something a little more up market, these milk bars are worth a visit at least once for the experience alone. Bargain Vietnamese meals are offered across the city for a similarly low price - for as little as €2/3 you can choose your meat and sauce and have it served with rice.

For those not under such tight budget constraints, there are some nice restaurants to be found in the city, including Belvédére in the Lazienki Gardens and others in Sródmiescie - and it should be noted that these are still cheap by western European standards - you will pay less in Warsaw for top quality food.
