Guide to Florence
Florence is a great city for exploring the artistic and cultural development of Italy over the centuries. Enjoy the buzz of the Ponte Vecchio, a shopping paradise for more than 100 years before tracing the steps of the Medici family, the supporters of artists of the city for hundreds of years. In the Galleria dell'Accademia, having wandered through the shiny corridors, turn the corner, and, at the far end of the room stands the stunning, larger than life, 'David' carved by Michelangelo. The rest of the gallery is filled with fascinating, unfinished statues; human forms appear to be struggling to get out of the giants blocks of stone, their soft bodies carved from the rough rocks by forgotten artists.
The Uffizi Gallery is home to a comprehensive collection of paintings from some of the world's most well known artists. Leonardo Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Rubens, Dürer, Angelico and Botticelli are all well represented here making it a brilliant way to wile away the hours.
