Guide to Bergamo

Bergamo is located in the Lombardy region and is a combination of two cities that have, over the centuries, combined to form a wonderfully destination. From the older hilltop city, Bergamo Alta, to the lower regions of newer Bergamo Bassa, Bergamo is a great destination for anyone wanting some peace in the Italian countryside and a taste of cultural city life. Bergamo is close to the magnificent cathedral city of Milan (60km) and the towns of Garda and Maggiore. The city has become easily accessible over recent years with budget airlines flying into the local airport.

The origins of Bergamo are evident throughout the sights in the city; the original walled city was settled around the 6 century B.C.E and rebuilt time and time again with the modern walls built in the 1600s. Sitting high on the hills, the fascinating scenes of the old city combine with the stunning Italian Alps to make beguiling backdrop for any trip.

The Museum of Natural Science is devoted to the remnants of pre-historic animals discovered in and around the Lombardy Region. The Archaeological Museum is home to the remains of former residents of the city; swords, battle wear, tombstones, building fragments and religious symbols are on display, ready for visitors to investigate. Both the museums are located in the in Bergamo Alta. The Piazza Vecchia is the centre of the town and dates from the 15th century; wandering through the small narrow streets one gets a real sense of history and the thousands of people who have walked here down the centuries. The Basilica de Santa Maria Maggiore stands near the Piazza and contains tapestries, wall hangings, devotional scenes and wonderful carvings on the interior and exterior of the building make it a fascinating sight. The Accademia Carrara, located on the Piazza dell'Accademia, houses one of the most valuable collections of pictures in Italy. There are thousands of paintings with works by Bottecelli, Belline, Cariani, Rafaello and other European artists such as Rubens and Durer. The cultural history and dedication to the Arts by the people of Bergamo has ensured the maintenance of many small museums in the city, enriching the life of the residents and providing great distractions for visitors. Moving out of the old city, the Bergamo Bassa was mainly constructed in the early part of the 20th century. The combination of the different times only serves to enhance the intriguing nature of the city; the views of the old city from Bassa is another reason for traipsing down the hill.
The region around Bergamo is replete with beautiful lakes and scenery; Lake Garda, with the small narrow streets of the town; Lake Maggiore and Lake Como are all within easy driving distance from Bergamo.
