Guide to Fota Wildlife Park
Fota Wildlife Park is home to more than 70 species of animals from around the world. Located 15 km from Cork city, the park has been home to hundreds of animal since 1983 and plays an important part in the conservation of species from around the world under the threat of extinction. Strolling along the wide paths that wind through Fota, the Colombian Spider Monkeys welcome the visitor with high-pitched calls and whoops that echo around the park. Swinging-diving-treeclimbing-munching residents entertain on Monkey Island and are sure to elicit smiles from all visitors. Across from Cheetah Hill, elegant giraffes stroll across the hilltop, mingling with capybara and grazing zebras, creating an awe inspiring sight.
Staff at the park have developed a successful cheetah breeding programme and more than 170 cheetahs have been born here since 1985. The cheetahs share the landscape with giraffes, rhinoceros, macaques and many other animals one would never imagine living on Irish soil. Visitors can sign up to adopt a species and support the conservation work in the park. A gift shop, cafe and children’s playground are on the grounds and picnic tables available, perfect for sharing homemade lunch. This park is a perfect place for a great day out in the fresh country air and everyone, not just the children, will be surprised and delighted by the sight of these unfamiliar residents at home in the Irish countryside.
