Galway Museum Guide

Galway is the largest city in the west of Ireland and is host to innumerable artists and visitors who come to soak in the atmosphere of the dynamic city. The city is renowned for artistic endeavour, cultural exhibits and excellent musical venues- visitors will not be short of distractions! There are many interesting places in the city including museums, churches and music venues. Here is a list of some interesting historical sites and museums.

The Galway City Museum is located on Spanish Parade in the city. There is a variety of exhibits of local historical importance in the collection. Artefacts from the ancient times as well as more recent stone carving form a large part of the collection.

Nora Barnacle House is located on Bowling Green in Galway City and was once home to Nora Barnacle, wife of James Joyce. Personal articles such as letters, phtographs and mementos remain on display. One for the literary fan.

The Galway Cathedral is located on the University Road near the Salmon Weir Bridge. This Renaissance style building dominates the skyline of the city and, beginning in 1965, took more than eight years to complete.

St. Nicholas' Collegiate Church is located on Lombard St. and has been a place of worship since 1320. Tombs, carvings and wonderful pieces of religious articles are are part of this fascinating building. Choral concerts and performances are often held here (check local press for details).
