Dublin Heritage Guide

More than one thousand years of visitors to the city has brought great change to the city of Dublin. Throughout the city Viking sites, medieval ruins, splendid churches, buildings and museums are open for exploration.

Christchurch Cathedral is located on a gentle slope at the top of Dame Street on a site where there has been a church since 1030. The stunning interior, with high vaulted ceiling, old artefacts and the Treasures of Christ Church exhibition are a fascinating exploration into the Cathedral's past. Attend a service for a chance to hear the organist and choir in action.

Dublin City Hall is located on Dame Street in the south of the city. The building holds 'The Story of the City' in the vaults of the Hall. The Rotunda Hall is a beautiful space enveloped in light with a stunning atmosphere. A walk down the spiral stairs brings the visitor to the exhibit and a small cafe that serves delicious treats.

Trinity College is located on College Green and is the home of the Book of Kells, a world renowned illuminated manuscript and the largest book collection in Ireland. The grounds stretch from the imposing front arch, across a cobbled square, to a large green space at the back that is used for sporting events.

Dublin Castle is located off Dame Street on raised ground that has been a site for fortifications for more than 1,000 years. There are tours around the Castle to the State Apartments, the Undercroft and The Chapel Royal.

The Chester Beatty Library is located inside the grounds of Dublin Castle and holds a collection of Sacred,  Islamic, Christian, Japanese and other manscripts from around the world. The collection is breathtakingly informative and may take more than one visit. An excellent restaurant and gift shop are located on the ground floor.

St.Michan's Church is located on Church Street in the north of the city. Built in the 1600s on an original Viking site, the church is still in use by local and visitors coming to view the well preserved mummified remains of former parishioners contents.
