Cork Museum Guide
Referred to as The People's Republic of Cork by local residents, Cork has always had a certain rebelliousness running through the hearts and minds of the people. The museums of the county vary in age, subject and location and are sure to perk every visitor’s interest.
The Cork Public Museum is located in a wonderfully green part of the city known as Fitzgerald'sPark. The museum was established in 1945. Surrounded by parklands the collections in the museums are a variety of local civic documents with some entries from producers of local arts and craftwork.

The Cork Heritage Park is located on the outskirts of the city in the Blackrock area. Surrounded by the beautiful grounds of Bessboro Estate, the park is dedicated to the maritime exploits of the local fleet and other modes of transport used in and around the county.

The town of Cobh and The Titanic Story are located 25 km from Cork city and tells the tale of emigrants leaving the country and the infamous tale of the Titanic. More than 2.5 million people emigrated from Ireland from 1845- 1960 on the vessels that were leaving the port. Cobh was the final port of call before the Titanic set out on its ill-fated voyage.

The Jameson Heritage Centre is located in Midleton, 18 km from Cork city and is the restored home of Jameson Whiskey producers. Here visitors may see the massive Pot Still, old mills and the stores for the grain that have been returned to their original glory.

Blarney Castle is located less than 10 km from Cork City and is famous for imbuing people with the 'gift of the gab' (kiss the stone first!) The castle was built in the 15th century by the McCarthy family and the legend arose out of the owner's attempt to charm with eloquent speak ('Blarney Talk'), the Queen of England.

The Cork City Gaol is located in the Sunday's Well area of the city. This was once the miserable home of hundreds of inmates in the 19th and 20th century. The daily lives of inmates are traced in the multimedia displays and exhibitions around the gaol.
