Cork Heritage Guide
Cork is a major city in the south of Ireland and is a great place to visit. Some places visitors to Cork should not miss- from the windswept Mizen Head to the calm imterior of Schull Planetarium there is plenty to occupy the visitor. Referred to as The People's Republic of Cork by local residents, this county has always had a certain rebelliousness running through the hearts and minds of the people- all visitors have to do is enjoy the atmosphere.
Mizen Head is the most southerly part of Ireland and is more than 100 km from Cork City near the small village of Gollen West. Here the visitor can see the forces wraught by the hard Atlantic Ocean that has carved and torn at the Irish coast to form fantastic beaches and cliff faces. There is an inforamtion centre and lighthouse marking the landscape.

Schull Planetarium is located in this small town near Mizen Head and is the only facility of its kind in the Republic of Ireland. The massive eight metre dome is open to the sky and here the visitor can see different displays and star configurations as recorded through history.

St. Finbarr's Cathedral is located on Bishop St. to the south of the smaller Lee channel in the city. Designed by William Burgess in a Gothic style the Cathedral is wonderful imposing structure at the top of a short hill. The stained glass windows, open bellied organ and stunning lightplay make for an interesting visit.

The English Market is located on Patricks Street in the centre of the city and has been a destination for shoppers since the 1800s. This beautiful old building is home to
sellers of fresh fish, local fruit and vegetables and exotic fare.
St. Anns Church is located on Shandon Street to the north of the city and was built in the 18th century. The bells have been peeling over the city for more than 200 years. The panoramic view of the city from the top of hte bell tower is well worth the climb.
