Budapest Mini Guide
The Budapest Ferihegy International Airport is the largest of Hungary's airports and is the sole airport that serves Hungary's capital city of Budapest. Located 16 km (10 miles) southeast of Budapest's centre, the airport is a busy transport hub (serving over 8 million passengers annually) and the main tourist gateway to Budapest.
Budapest is made up of 23 different districts, however it is possible to divide it more simply into two cities, Buda (the hilly western side of the Danube) and Pest (the flat eastern side, and business center of Budapest). Budapest (often referred to as the Paris of the East) is a really beautiful city, and has enjoyed a deserved increase in tourism in recent years. In fact, as a city break destination, it offers the beauty and sensation of a fine Italian city but at a comparatively low cost. Budget travelers will delight not only in the stunning landscape and architecture, but in the cheap cost of attractions, food, drink and accommodation.
Things to see/do in Budapest
Castle Hill is on the Buda side of the Danube and is the historical centre of the city of Budapest. Some of the attractions on Castle Hill include the Royal Palace, the National Gallery, Matthew Church and the Fisherman's Bastion and lookout terrace which provides a wonderful view across the Danube to the Pest side of the city. There are a number of other museums of interest in this area of Budapest, most with a low cost of admission, making them ideal for people working within a budget.
The bridges on the Danube are beautiful structures, in particular the Chain Bridge, and really add to a leisurely stroll along the banks of the Danube. Or if you find walking a little too taxing during your holiday, a boat ride on the river is highly recommended - relatively cheap and a thoroughly relaxing experience. A terrific view over the bridges is granted from Budapest's Citadella, located on top of Gellert hill in Buda.
There are some two hundred known caves in (and underneath) Budapest, four of which are open to tourists (and, luckily, these are four of the most extensive and spectacular). The caves are fascinating and a welcome refuge from the sun during the hot summer months!
If you are lucky enough to be visiting Budapest in August, you'd be mad to miss the annual Sziget festival on Obudai Island. It's a true 'budget' festival - a week's ticket comes at the low cost of around €100 with equally cheap day tickets available. Not only are the tickets great value, but the low cost beer and food mean that even those on a seriously thrifty budget can enjoy a week long festival at cheap prices.
The baths in Budapest are really the final remnant of Turkish culture in Budapest, and a vestige that they will likely want to hang on to. Built on hot springs, these thermal pools usually include soaking pools, swimming pools, saunas steam baths and massage services - definitely a must-do when visiting Budapest.
Eating out/nightlife in Budapest
Hungarian food is big food - lots of meat, eggs, rich sauces and a liberal use of paprika. Of course there is much more to Hungarian cuisine than the stereotypical goulash, and with an improvement in economy and an increase in tourism, many new restaurants have sprung up around the city, and it is possible to get a great meal at a great price. Vegetarians may be in trouble, as while there are meat-free options, they are sparse and often unimaginative. For cheap food and good quality budget dining, avoid the tourist-saturated and over-priced areas (such as Váci Utca) - the food is likely to be very middle-of-the-road but with a serious price tag. You will pay less in restaurants frequented by locals - keep your eyes peeled!
Top Four Drives Budapest
1. Etyek Wine Region
A short 26km drive from Budapest will take you to Hungary's Etyek wine region. On the way you'll pass the lush landscape of the northern border of the County Fejer, a fertile area, which lends itself to 2000 hectares of vineyard. Etyek's variety of grapes is specially grown for sparking wine, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. The region's most famous wine enterprise is that of the Törley family, which first came to prominence in Hungary's wine scene towards the end of the 19th century.
2. Hollóko Village
The pretty village of Hollóko is a 100km journey north of Budapest. From Budapest, follow the M3 motorway to Hatvan and then exit at route 21. Hollóko is signposted immediately before Pászto. This World Heritage site is well worth a drive and offers visitors the chance to experience traditional Hungarian village life. Attractions in Hollóko include authentic Hungarian peasant dwellings, a post-office, school and village hall, which create the impression of a 'living museum'. Villagers of Hollóko are known as Palóc people and are proud of their preserved dialect, traditions and costumes. Hollóko plays host to a number of festivals and events during the calendar year including The Easter Festival, July's Rasberry Festival and August's Castle Tournament.
3. Hortobágy National Park
Hortobágy National Park is Europe's largest open grassland plain can be reached from Budapest via the M3 motorway to Füzesabony. From here, follow route 33 towards Debrecen. Hortobágy is home to a wide range of flora and fauna including the mangalica pig and the grey cattle. Top visitor attractions in Hortobágy include the village tourist centre, the Herdsmen's Museum and the Kilenclyukú híd stone bridge. Hungry visitors are well catered for at the many traditional inns in the village which serve up cheap local fare and low cost wine from the region. The park is the venue for a number of popular events including International Horse Days and the Hídi Fair in August.
4. Szentendre Artist Retreat
The charming and historic town of Szentendre is situated in Pest County, not far from Budapest. Szentendre is famous for its rich cultural heritage. The cobbled streets and picturesque medieval buildings have long attracted artists and writers to the town. Today Szentendre is famous for its museums and art galleries. Art galleries worth a visit include Palmetta Design Gallery, Lajos Vajda Museum and Szentendre Gallery. The town also boasts a good range of shops, reasonably priced restaurants and cheap cafés, catering to thrifty artists and tourists on a budget.
