Athens Mini-Guide:

Athens International Airport is situated 33km to the south of Athens. Athens Airport offers a range of services and facilities including ATMs, banks, and facilities for the disabled, as well as information desks. To reach the city centre, drive via Attiki Odos and the expansive motorway called Athens City Ring Road.

Considered by many as the birthplace of civilization, Athens offers visitors plenty of scope for touring.

Things To See/Do:

One way to see the world famous sights of Athens is a guided walking tour. The Acropolis Hill is recognised as one of the 7 wonders of the world and one that you will probably go to first. It’s easy to see why the ancient site is so revered, with its impressive white marble columns of the Parthenon temple shining in the sun. Photographers of all levels are sure to get an ace view of the city and its magnificent spectacle here.

For those wanting to take advantage of some of the fantastic beaches located on the city’s outskirts, why not drive out to nearby Vouliagmeni, which is situated only 20km from Athens city centre. Palea Fokea is another option. Its sandy beach is located to the southeast of Athens close to a pretty fishing village.

Eating Out/Nightlife/Accomodation:

Athens offers restaurants to suit every taste and budget. Local specialities include: Souvlaki, Keftedes and Kalamaraki. These quick snacks are available for those on the go from Tavernas, where you may also be offered a free after-dinner shot of the potent local drink Ouzo. Other light dishes for thrifty budgets include: Koulouria and Kebabs.

The best time to sample Athens’ nightlife is to go out after midnight. Hot spots include Kalonaki’s Skoufan and Haritos streets which are lined with fly R’n’B clubs, trendy bars and cool Techno haunts. Gazi and Syntagma are other fashionable areas. Accommodation in Athens ranges from sleep cheap budget hostels to five star luxury. Accomodation isn’t always easy to get in the summertime, due to local and nationwide festivals so it’s wise to book in advance for the best cheap deals and to be guaranteed a bed. For those looking to pay less, Central Hotel at Apollonos offers basic low cost rooms from €99. Those seeking something on the upper end of the price line, will find themselves in the lap of luxury at the Grande Bretagne, located on Syntagma Square, prices start at €290.

DAY TRIPPING FROM ATHENS

Once you have seen the Acropolis and all of Athens' main attractions and sights, why not take advantage of the freedom and comfort of your rental car and make an excursion to a nearby town or beach. Discover a little more of Greece, and do it at low cost - organised tours can be expensive to book, but with car hire you can go wherever you like, whenever you like, without any extra impact on your budget.

Here are just some of the superb - and superbly thrifty - excursions possible from Athens, so grab your camera and hop in your rental car to see what Greece has to offer…

1. Delphi

Delphi is easily one of the most significant archaeological sites of Greece, and as such it is top of our list of destinations for anyone interested in taking a day (or two) trip out of Athens. As breathtakingly beautiful as it is historically important, Delphi is worth the 3-hour drive from Athens.

Here you will find the famous 'Oracle', the place where ancient Greek rulers congregated for centuries to look for guidance. It is a vast complex of plinths, buildings and the ruins of the ancient Temple of Apollo, set on a sheer craggy hillside that's looks over the Sanctuary of Athena (the Marmaria). A tough climb (particularly under the Greek sun) will bring you to the theatre where you will find humbling views of the site in its entirety. There is a museum at the site that displays a comprehensive and fascinating collection of artifacts found on the site.

Many people making the trip from Athens prefer to stay overnight in a nearby town - either the quaint and picturesque Arahova, or the seaside towns of Itea or Galaxidi. Cheap accommodation and low cost restaurants can be found in these places, and overall the excursion is budget friendly and truly memorable.

2. Sounio

Cape Sounio lies just under 70km (43 miles) from Athens, and is an ideal location for a day trip from the city. At the topmost point of the cape is an elevated precipice on which stands the ruin of the ancient Temple of Poseidon, dating back to the 4th Century BC. A visit to the ruins promises truly awesome views over the sea and islands, particularly spine-tingling at sunset. Bring a picnic with you to munch as you watch the sun go down behind the islands. Another low cost day out, a trip to Sounio is highly recommended.

There are accommodation options near Sounio, at the exclusive resorts along the Apollo Coast. Here you will also find superb restaurants and pristine beaches - depending on your budget you may want to stick around for a while, but it is not a cheap option. Rafina, to the north of Sounio might be a better low cost option for thrifty budget travelers.

3. Vouliagmeni Lake and Health Spa

This superb excursion requires just a quick drive in your rental car. 20km from the centre of Athens you will find the stunning peninsula of Vouliagmeni. The area is home to exquisite sandy beaches with crystal-clear waters, the most notable of which is the Vouliagmeni beach. Across the road from this beach is Lake Vouliagmeni - a natural mineral spa with a fixed temperature of 25°C. The water is poured into the lake from underground caves, and is said to have therapeutic and healing properties for a number of rheumatic and arthritic ailments as well as nerve and gynecological disorders. If you're fit and healthy, the lake is also great for a relaxing swim - and they do say that prevention is better than cure!

The landscape is stunning, the lake is surrounded with umbrellas and sun-chairs for shading swimmers, and in the summer there are hot-spring water baths, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy. Perfect relaxation, and a lot cheaper (and probably more natural) than a visit to an exclusive spa.
