A short drive from the centre of Stuttgart is the medieval town of Esslingden. The charming 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' style town famous for winemaking, and tours are available of the renowned Kessler Distillery which produces Sekt (German champagne, like Sapin's Cava), however it is necessary to book up to a month in advance due to it's popularity. The guided tour is a cheap €7.50, and glasses of Sekt cost only €2 each in the upper rooms of the distillery.

For children and adults alike, the Wilhelma Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a marvelous and low cost attraction, and the largest of its kind in all of Europe. Over 9,000 animals live here - lions, tigers, bears (oh my), spider monkeys that leap 12ft into the air, elephants, and most anything else you can imagine! Beside the zoo you will find the Leuze Mineral Bath complex, which boasts three indoor spas, two outdoor, solariums and a number of mineral water saunas, as well as sports grounds, a café and children's playgrounds.

There is an excellent and budget friendly Mercedes Benz Museum on Mercedesstrasse (free admission) that is open from Tuesday to Sunday and offers an insight into the world's oldest auto factory, and pays tribute to the invention of the motorcar.

There are many superb restaurants in Stuttgart, with the city having a higher number of Michelin starred restaurants per capita than any other German city.
