Plaisance International Airport is an easier-to-pronounce name for what is officially called the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. Located in Plaine Magnien near Plaisance, the airport is the base of Air Mauritius and is lies just 26 (nautical) miles southeast of Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius.

Lying in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Africa (east of Madagascar), Mauritius is a small, stunningly beautiful jewel of an island. A tropical climate and top class beaches make this oasis of calm an enchanting and exotic holiday destination.

Things to see/do in Mauritius

There is plenty to see and do on the Island - that's if you can find the motivation to leave the poolside or beach! Grand bay is located in the North of the Island, and is wonderful for shopping and leisure activities. La Cuvette beach can be found here, and having been recently restored, is well worth visiting. The Triolet Shivala is in the North of the Island also, and hosts a huge Hindu temple (the Maheswarnath) that may be of interest. On the East of the Island you will find a Water Park, a colourful open-air market, and the Ile aux Cerfs, a tiny Island famed for its water sports.

The Ile aux Aigrettes is further south, an Island that is home to rare and endangered wildlife and plant life, including the pink pigeon, the giant tortoise and the Gecko Phelsuma. There is an abundance of water sports facilities throughout the Island, with wonderful conditions for scuba divers - tropical fish and a coral reef make for a stunning underwater world. Scuba diving can be quite an expensive hobby - those on a budget may like to try snorkeling. You can see just as much wonderful sea-life but you will pay less for the experience.

Eating out/nightlife in Mauritius

Mauritius has cuisine to excite every palate, with a wonderful mix of influences and traditions from France, China, India and Africa. Intense aromas and spices (particularly Creole and Indian) are used in the cooking, and those who like strong flavours will be particularly happy. Eating out on a budget is best done by visiting the street stalls, you will always pay less here than in a restaurant - however the food can be oily and is often deep-fried. Look out for stalls with long queues, these will be the best and probably cheapest.

The nightlife in Mauritius is varied, with a selection of bars and clubs that cater to all types of clientele. The Grand Bay area is a popular spot for a night out, and you will find a good crowd here. The local low cost rum, as well as the cheap local beer will delight those traveling with a budget in mind.
