Opera Season Verona

Verona, June-September

Background
Verona’s ancient Roman Amphitheatre Arena di Verona plays host to the annual outdoor opera season, which takes place between mid June and early September.  The festival is Italy’s oldest and was first established in 1933.  Since then, classic operas such as Aida and Madame Butterfly have been laid on for the public’s enjoyment.  2007 promises to be a summer spectacular for die-hard opera fans as well as newcomers.  The festival is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year with a selection of five of the country’s most famous operas, including Verdi’s Nabucco and Aida, Puccini’s La Bohéme, Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Verdi’s La Traviata.
The VenueThe Arena di Verona is situated just outside of the town’s city walls and dates back to 30AD.    The historic venue has in the past hosted a galaxy of superstars from the world of opera, including the legendary Maria Callas.  The arena has ample seating and can accommodate audiences of up to 30,000.  Complementary candles for audience members make summer’s evening performances especially atmospheric.
While in town, you may also like to check out Verona’s Summer Theatre Festival which takes place between June and August.  This year, the festival includes English language performances of Shakespeare’s Richard II.

Ticket prices for these events vary and depend on the performance, seating and date.  Prices for operas at Arena di Verona start at €19, climbing to €179 for the best seats in the house.  Reduced ticket prices are available for people over 60 years and under 26.
